PROGRAM OVERVIEW
TSONS’s curriculum is designed to relate to the whole child – cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically. Activities are planned to be appropriate to each child’s age and stage of development. A consistent daily schedule enables children to have confidence in the structure of their day and fosters self-initiated and self-directed play, the best vehicles for their growth and development at this stage. The daily schedule is planned to provide a balance of activities such as indoor/outdoor, quiet/active, individual/group, large muscle/small muscle, and child initiated/staff initiated. Curriculum concepts and directed art activities revolve primarily around the calendar, yearly seasons and holidays. There are no set expectations that a child will reach a particular benchmark at the end of each year, just that they have progressed in an appropriate manner from where they started
We offer several unique programs, each with their own age-appropriate curriculum. Our First Year and Pre-K Year programs provide half-day classes with either a morning session from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or an afternoon session from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. mid-September through mid-June. We offer an optional supervised lunchtime as well as Enrichment classes (with themes such as art, science, drama, nature, cooking, math and woodworking, etc.)
We offer Parent & Me and Transition classes for those children who are too young to begin Nursery School. Participation in these early programs gives a child priority status for enrollment in the Nursery School, as space is available.
In addition, there are Summer Sessions for Parent & Me, Transition and Nursery School age children

First Year:
Children start our program each September when they are between the ages of 2 years 9 months and 3 years 9 months. The separation process is handled delicately and lasts as long as the child or parent requires. Children may attend school 2 or 3 days per week
During their first year of pre-school, importance is placed on fostering independence, self-esteem, socialization, language development and being part of a class. Through art and play, they are exposed to the concepts of pre-reading, counting, measuring, grouping, decision-making, balance, gravity, reasoning, cooperation, self-awareness, empathy, patience, self-esteem, self-expression and feelings of competence and independence. Children are introduced to the “school readiness skills” of listening to the teacher, following directions, waiting for a turn, and being excited about the learning process.
Pre-K Year:
This year helps to develop further the child’s self-esteem, self-confidence, ability to sequence longer directions and handle frustration/disappointments. While focusing on exercising small motor skills and handling more of their own problem-solving in preparation for Kindergarten, children will be cutting and writing every day and will have greater behavioral expectations. Children may attend school 3-5 days per week in the morning or 3-4 days in the afternoon.
Enrichment:
Three times a year various programs are offered to extend a child’s day. Morning students can choose to attend an additional class daily from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Afternoon students can enroll in one class from 12 noon-1:00 p.m. and/or one from 4:00-5:00 p.m. These classes supplement our TSONS curriculum and help build stamina. Subjects include art and the artist, nursery school literature, drama, science, math, nature, cooking and woodworking.

FROM THE DIRECTOR:
I am very excited about the 2010 TSONS Summer Program. It is our goal to provide young children with age appropriate and exciting summer fun in a familiar, comfortable, and safe setting.
The warm summer days will be filled with songs, arts & crafts, games, guest visitors, non-pool water play, pre-sports activities, and special surprises!
All classes will be taught by qualified Early Childhood teachers.
The children will be divided into age groupings and will spend from 9 am to 1 pm in the classrooms and on the yards. THE POOL WILL NOT BE USED BY OUR PROGRAM DURING THESE FOUR HOURS.
A Pool Enrichment class is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 1 pm – 3 pm. On Wednesdays, your child will paint with watercolors, hoses, wet feet and more! On and Fridays, we will make our own popsicles, strawberry shortcake, home made ice cream and other yummy summer treats.
The life guard and instructors in the pool for our Swim Enrichment Clsses will be provided by Sunsplash Swim School, owned and operated by Michal Harris. Sunsplash Swim School will also be offering private and semi-private swim lessons during and after our summer program hours. For more information on the Swim School, please call (818) 939-2009 or email sunsplashswim.com..
TSONS is a great option for Pre-K Students who want to reduce the number of transitions before Kindergarten. Also, Kindergarten students can come back for summer days filled with special activities just for these “older” kids!
I look forward to being a part of your family’s summer plans. As always, feel free to call with any questions you might have. Stock up on sunscreen, find a comfortable hat and make your plans for a summer that includes the TSONS experience.
