PRE K PLUS AND
DK PROGRAMS

Supplemental programs providing increased time, targeted skill development, and structured readiness for successful entry into Kindergarten.

Pre-K Plus Program

Pre-K PLUS, designed for our younger PreK students, is a 2, 3 or 4 day a week program. Your child will spend the morning in either of the PreK classrooms, then meet in The Sea Lion Room for Pre-K PLUS from 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Confidence and self-esteem building is a major part of this curriculum. It expands, challenges and provides opportunities for these children to explore, discover, practice, build upon, and many times master, what they are exposed to in Pre-K. This Pre-K PLUS program will provide opportunities to expand and reinforce everything that is presented in the morning Pre-K classes. Children will have age-appropriate, hands-on experiences and activities that increase their school readiness skills as well as fostering those independence and self-help skills necessary for the next step.

The year will focus on Pre-Reading and Pre-Math concepts presented in a variety of ways and integrating other subjects like science, art, cooking and movement. Since most activities in the first half of the year are hands-on, there may not be anything to take home and share. For example, the children may be using a clothespin (for small muscle development) to sort poms-poms by color then counting how many are in each color bowl. The teachers do share pictures periodically so you can see how many fun things they are doing! Later in the year the children may be given the same activity in an abstract way using pictures of different objects they must visually sort, count, and stamp (or even write) the number of each object. The children love bringing home their “big kid” worksheets to show their families!

Most importantly, we will meet children at their level and build from there. Our plan is not to make everything easy for them, but to stretch their capacity to handle all that we offer. Each and every activity has a purpose providing growth for the whole child…cognitively/academically, socially, emotionally and physically (small and large muscle development). Teacher support is always provided to ensure the children are successful in and enjoying the program.

Developmental Kindergarten Program

DK is a year-long program held 3 or 4 days a week. Your child will spend the morning in their PreK classroom and then meet in the Narwhal Room for DK from 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Children on the older end of our PreK program have the option of enrolling in our Developmental Kindergarten program. Because of the academic nature of both public and private Kindergarten programs, this third-year option provides young children the opportunity to be cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically ready.

Our goal is to provide a hands-on environment that is stimulating and multisensory as well as appealing to all learning styles—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. We foster a love for learning and provide children with the skills they’ll need to be successful the following year in kindergarten. This program concentrates on introducing pre-kindergarten skills including increased independence, responsibility for their own work and personal belongings, writing, pre-reading, pre-math, and science experiments all presented in a hands-on way that is fun and engaging. We purposefully want to give each child additional time to adjust to greater expectations.

Our program builds on what is being done in the morning Pre-K classes by providing older children with the opportunity to be challenged a little more and to move forward at their own pace. For some children, DK provides the opportunity to transition from one classroom to another preparing them for the multiple learning centers in kindergarten (e.g. science lab, computer lab, music room, art room, etc.) and keeping track of their belongings as they go. The program employs a thematic approach that focuses one day each week on Language Arts and one day on Math and Science, with additional opportunities for gross and fine motor development. There will be some worksheet activities, however, the emphasis will be on children experiencing success through various age appropriate and fun activities.

We believe that there is a fine line between preparing children for what to expect in kindergarten and providing a Developmental Kindergarten program that keeps children engaged, yet not overwhelmed, with a full week of very long days. Our DK students are still young children who need time to explore, discover, and learn in a nursery school setting.
